Chosen by Mystery: Walking the Heretic's Path
The Old Ones are calling—I’m answering (again). Going off the grid and into the Mystery to write the next installation in The Heretic Trilogy. Find out what's happening here while I'm off the map!
ATTENTION HERETICS: I’LL BE GONE FOR THE NEXT 6 WEEKS!
Read below to learn what’s happening while I’m gone.
Mystery is at the heart of my work.
Not the Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie kind of mystery. Those mysteries are fundamentally solvable. They can be explained away by tidy solutions… by uncovering facts not yet known. Those mysteries leave you feeling satisfied and complete.
I know nothing of that kind of mystery.
The Mystery I play in has driven humankind forward since the dawn of Time. People spend lifetimes getting tangled in it. This Mystery so misunderstood, distorted, and convoluted that you can find a thousand answers and never be correct. It leaves you breathless… and all ways wanting more.
A decade and more ago, I was chosen by Sir Henry Lincoln—the man who found the codes in churches in the South of France that inspired The Da Vinci Code. He was pulled into a Mystery adventure that led him to discover an ancient secret hidden through time.
His powerful discovery was a truth, based in math and science, that our ancestors passed down through the ages. Yet modern humans walked right it by without Seeing or understanding the significance of what he found.
A generation of seekers came to the Languedoc. A generation of writers published books about the Mystery. But when they tried to capture this secret to the page, it quickly became a tangled maze of interpretations and assumptions.
Sir Henry was fond of saying that what he would show you was “demonstrable and provable.” From there, the world ran with it in every direction.
Rumors spread like wildfire across the countryside. It was said (and written by modern hands) that Jesus and Mary Magdalene1 visited the region where these codes were found, with no historical evidence upon which to base the claim. Could anyone imagine a power… a truth… a secret that pre-dated the storylines of humankind?
To stand in the presence of Mystery is awe-inspiring.
It makes your knees quake and your teeth clatter. If you can stand there long enough to notice details, your mind begins to scream, begging to understand… to somehow draw nearer.
Through the years, I’ve seen many give in to the tempestuous screaming of the mind for answers. Knowing no other alternative, they created answers. Yet I have also lived to see many regret that choice.
Answers kill the Mystery.
In the light of paltry explanation, the beauteous flame of Mystery ceases to dazzle.
I’ve often been asked why Sir Henry chose me.
My mentor tried for years to find someone to whom he could pass the legacy of his Wisdom… and his burden of understanding. What did the Mystery Master see in me that had him invite me to play with centuries-old secrets?
I can write, yes. That would be important if I were ever to share this truth with the world. I also had the necessary background of information—familiarity with French language and culture as well as an understanding of history which did not belittle those who came before us.
But what truly made me stand out from the crowd was my ability to take Mystery into my body and sit in the resulting Silence. Sir Henry waited for over a decade for someone—like him—who loved the Mystery did not seek to fill the Void with their own voice.
Long before I met Sir Henry, I learned to play in unanswerable Questions.
The earth, sea, and sky taught me.
The Ancient Celtic blood running through my veins remembers the Sacred Pattern—the way that Everything lives and dies in a breath and a blink. The sacred gifts handed down through my lineage allow me to See beyond the veil… Hear the silent whispers… Feel the caress of invisible forces.
No… I’m not on a quest for answers.
I understand the limitations of my humanity—the way this silly, fragile life cannot hold the Numinous, only glimpse it.
Humans were not built to understand… only to experience.
“Live the questions now.”
—Rainer Maria Rilke
Only Questions—which live in the vast expanse of the Unknown—are big enough to hold you. Answers will not leave you sated. Only Mystery itself, in all its wild Darkness, can satisfy your longing.
And so, I seek not to solve the Mystery, but to experience it.
That simple distinction has led me to discoveries and revelations beyond imagination. It has guided me through untold adventures. And it is beckoning me forward right now.
In less than a week, I set off again on the trail of Mystery—through the heart of Old Occitania, now known as the South of France.
To follow the Path the old ones walked…
To steep myself in the Unknown…
To once again put pen to page…
… As so long ago, Sir Henry asked me to do.
As I head off on this adventure (this time with my mother an daughter instead of wily old Sir H for my companion)… I pray that I stay grounded in my body, rooted in my life, and connected with those I love most.
To transmit Mystery through writing is a heroic feat—one that I lost myself in last time.
A decade ago, Sir Henry charged me with telling the real story of what he found. The Da Vinci Code got it wrong. So many others have unintentionally perverted the truth. My mentor asked me to put the story back—with all its history and magic—in a thrilling epic that would invite modern humans on their own spiritual adventure through the ages.

Now, the sequel is calling me.
The second installment in The Heretic Trilogy—The Martyr—has long awaited my return to the Mystery. At long last, I’m being called back to the sacred South of France to continue the work of transmitting and translating ancient secrets for a modern audience.
ATTENTION HERETICS:
Info for the Coming Weeks
While I’m away, we won’t be holding our usual live events here at Mystery, Magic & Mayhem.
Instead, I’m being pulled toward creating something powerful for my paid subscribers here on Substack that I hope to share with you soon. (We’ll see what comes through!)
I also won’t be writing my usual, irregular articles. Instead, I’ll be focusing on writing The Martyr. As any author knows, to write a book requires offering oneself the space to step away. For the next few weeks, I’ll be giving myself over to visionary historical novel writing and whatever else I’m called to do.
BUT…
I want to make sure that my amazing community here has the opportunity to stay connected with the magic that’s possible for you.
So I’ve invited my FAVORITE writers to create guest articles for you!
That means that every week, you’ll have a new and powerful post from a different writer, with new ideas to train and grow your magic.
I plan to return on June 15, when we will once again return to our monthly calendar of live events, including…
Heretic Happy Hour — Q&A about Sacred France
Magical Reading Circle — Exploring healing the chakras
Love Money Practice Group — Practicing enjoyment
While I’m off adventuring, you’re invited to continue to exploring the theme of surrender, diving deeply into our magical book club title Eastern Body, Western Mind, and practicing enjoying your life in all it’s ebbs and flows to create a powerful relationship with Money.
Wishing you all a magical season! 💜 ✨
An ancient legend says that Mary Magdalene landed on the shores of Provence in a boat with no oars and no sails. This story is old enough that, while technically unprovable, it may nonetheless be reliable in the oral tradition.
What I take issue with is writers sharing personal visions and spiritual experiences as fact, research that relies upon hypotheses as conclusions, and modern rumors being passed off as ancient legends.
To quote Sir Henry… “You must never believe anything you read!”
Blessings on your journey Allysha! In all of its ways! Glad you are answering the call by taking this trek! Looking forward to hearing, seeing and reading what arises from it. Again, blessings to you dear one! 💜
Have dived headlong into the story which has collided with a personal journey I'm on - There are no coincidences in life and so excited that our lives intersected at just the perfect moment. Can't wait to learn what you've discovered and wish you a marvelous adventure in France.
