The forest outside my back window still remembers when the settlers came with their axes. Those ignorant humans often died, starving and freezing in these woods without a care for the trees that would have happily saved them.
The trees still remember that time.
They whisper to me of the connection we children of the colonizers have lost…

A magic so quiet and subtle it’s easy to ignore.
Sometimes, when I’m walking in the woods, I feel it flying in on the wind. Times like those, I wish I could grasp it, take it into my body, and keep it there.
But connection does not happen in stasis—all ways in flow.
When I’m lucky, it washes through me, and for a brief moment, I see the world as the trees do—a tangle of root and relationship… deeply interconnected… soil, water, sun, and Self inextricably intermingling.
Flow that is life… blood… breath… bringing us together and pulling us apart.
In this season, I can feel the flow all around me.
This is maple country, and the sap is waking.
Any moment now, my life will devolve into a series of casseroles and clothes that smell constantly of bonfire.
My days will be spent hauling buckets and chopping wood, growing strong with the scent of the land ripe on me all the time.
My daughter will run yelling joyauntly through the trees, brandishing sticks and buckets, begging to go down and see if the frozen creek is still strong enough to bear her weight.
I will laugh that I don’t have time to write as the landscape writes me.
I will say that I should be at my computer, when I know that I was born to be by the fires, drinking in the cold air and hot sap concoctions that drive us through these icy days.
Maple season here is a time when the call of the woods and wild is all that matters. When we set aside the needs of the body and mind for the needs of the sap and fire.

Last year I was a novice… newly introduced to the ways of tree and spile. I was so caught in the whirlwind of fire and ice that I didn’t think to make offerings. I didn’t endeavor to remember the old ways.
Now, I go consciously into maple season, knowing that for every ounce of pure maple goodness we make, we will haul forty times as much lifeblood from the forest. The fires which we endlessly stoke… the cauldron full of sweet, sticky sap… and the heartbeats which haul, boil, and pour the sap are intimately and intricately connected with the land.
I prayed to be shown the offerings… the prayers to honor the trees and the forest in their fullness before we collect their sweet heart’s blood.
Now, the prayers have been said.
Gifts of herbs and honey, carrots and cabbage, nuts and sweet nothings. Offerings laid by the hands of my little one… sprinkled on the wind… whispered in our hearts.
The are spiles driven… the buckets are hung… the fires are kindled.
Last weekend, we shoveled snow from the firepits. Yesterday we shored up a few taps and covered the buckets to keep rainwater from mixing with the precious sap.
The season has started slowly, gently, but it is coming for us.
You will likely tire hearing my metaphors of the lifeblood of trees and grow weary of the insights of the forest before this season is finished. Just as my hands will callous and grow weary of chopping wood, hauling buckets, and running constantly between worlds.
All around me wars rage on… politicians cause suffering for those they’ve never met… and humans forget how deeply we belong to this world.
For me—all there is to do is settle in, listen to the call of the wild, and try to remember what the world knew before the colonizers came.
Some days, I feel as if I understand the natural reciprocity of Life—that it is not what the trees can do for me or what I can do for the trees, but what we can do together that matters.

What we can do together is smoky-rich, sticky-sweet maple syrup.
Here in Canada, it’s more cherished than gold.
As it should be.
Our Community Energy Magic event is coming up this Friday. This month, we’re focusing on the theme of BELONGING—connecting with the heritage we all claim as creatures of Earth and re-kindling our deep interconnection with all of Life.
Community Energy Magic
Friday, March 14 @ 9:30am PST / 12:30pm EST / 6:30pm CET / 3:30am AEDT (+1 Day)
A Divinely-guided transmission where you’ll learn to experience the deep belonging that is your birthright as a creature of Earth. Connecting with the energy of Mama Earth herself and beginning to re-pattern old stories of disconnection, you are invited to step into your rightful place in the family of things.
→ Event recording will be available to Heretics of the Inner Sanctum.
Preparing for Energy Magic
Please set aside at least one hour for this coaching session. Choose a place for the call that is comfortable and free of distractions, where you feel safe to focus completely on your well-being and your inner world. You may want to have pillows and a blanket, tissues, and a glass of water nearby.
Energy Magic is completely participatory. You will be learning and engaging with your own energy healing. For best results, I recommend you take some time before the transmission begins to see if there is a particular intention you would like to bring to the session.
Please be sure to drink plenty of water the day of the session. For lasting results, plan to give yourself space after the session to integrate the energies and magic you experience.
