December is upon us, and while everyone runs around complaining about Christmas music and trying to get the last of the shopping done, I’ll likely be found baking cookies and looking for small, sweet things that make my heart flutter with magic.
For me, it’s not just Christmas. This time is about honoring the descent into Darkness—the beautiful, ages-old celebrations that humans need to make it through winter.
As a California girl living in the wilds of Québec, winter is precious to me. It’s a time of in-turning and deep quiet. It is a time when everything else falls away (which, as a writer, is my favorite thing).
I’ve always loved the Darkness and the way the human heart grows afraid of the Unknown. There’s something soft and childlike that arises in us when we allow ourselves this kind of primordial fear.
That’s where I find Christmas magic.
We all complain about how busy and commercial the holidays have become, but aren’t the worst parts of the holidays simply representations of our fears come to life?
Family feeling like duty when we wish it would bring us joy…
Spending money we don’t have or don’t want to spend when we have to work so hard to earn it…
Stress… obligation… busyness… overwhelm…
These are the modern fears that haunt our days. This is the current retelling of an ancient story.
For our ancestors, the celebration of Light in the Darkness would have been joyful. Yet the context in which those celebrations occurred—the impending descent of winter—would have been dreaded with the same fervor that many dread the holiday season.
Instead of going through the motions and ignoring the terrible feelings these traditions bring up, each year, I try to allow myself to feel. Feeling deeply—even when the feelings aren’t good—invites me to find authentic ways to celebrate.
Every year it’s different. Sometimes I find solace in singing carols, and I revive the ancient tradition of going door-to-door to delight the neighbors. Sometimes I sit and read by the fire late into the dark evenings, marveling at the wonders of our modern comforts. Most years, I delight in baking, enjoying the precision and chemistry of kitchen magic. This year, instead of agonizing over buying presents, I asked everyone exactly what they wanted and ordered everything online while staring out at my snowy backyard forest.
Everyone is different. Every year is different.
With all our modern conveniences and concerns, it’s easy to think we’re somehow separate from other humans through the ages.
But we are still deeply human.
I see the same history replaying itself age after age… only the context changing. New players on the stage bring a new interpretation of the script, but the story is the same.
Preparing for winter brings overwhelm for everyone… even the squirrels.
Entering the Dark season brings fear, which manifests in the modern world as busyness, in an attempt to avoid feeling.
And Light brings hope, whether experienced through the lens of Christmas or any other celebration.
I will spend this holyday season—as I always do—in a search Light, hope, and magic.
I hope you’ll join me in inviting your sweet, soft Self to play in the Magic of the Brilliant Darkness.

Light & Hope in the Darkness
As we descend into Darkness in the Northern Hemisphere, a sweet expansive space opens in our lives. The world so often presses close, but in the Darkness, there is room to breathe. How do we face the fear that is the key to unlocking that freedom?
And from this space of Everything and Nothing, how do we find the Light? Not the artificial blue light of lamps and screens… but the Light buried within Everything. Perhaps as we adjust to the Darkness, we will have eyes to See the Light.
Join us with your favorite brew for an hour of magical inspiration with kindred spirits in a safe-to-be-yourself space.
Agree Darkness is the gift for this time of the year. And I am totally a sun lover! There is always a transition time I have to go through. On all levels, physically, emotionally, mentally,, spiritually. Today with it being overcast, like a blanket descending over me, the darkness feels more palpable. Maybe a bit less resistance.
