How I Use Substack to Create a Sacred Space to Reclaim Our Ancestral Magic

We say we want to be different.

But when we really are different, it’s easy to look left and right, wondering if what we’re doing is okay.

That’s sometimes how I feel about my Substack, because I’m not really using it the way “other people” use Substack.

For one—I never paywall my writing.

Partially because I want everyone to have access to the things I write, but also because I don’t want to feel obligated to write an article every week or churn something out when I’m uninspired.

I have an agreement with mySelf:

I write what I want to write when I want to write it
—or more accurately—
I write what I’m called to write, when I’m called to write it.

Trying to do anything else usually turns up the kind of drivel that you really can’t tell apart from ChatGPT.

Yes—even good writers write mediocre crap when they’re uninspired.

So, instead of paywalling my writing on Substack, I’ve gone a completely different route… and perhaps gone way overboard!

(Or perhaps found hidden treasure!)

For years now, I’ve longed to create a magical community— a place where people who are really interested in the ancestral magic of our birthright can train, share, and play together.

When I realized that Substack offered a natural way to create a bridge from my writing toward a wider community…

I jumped all in.

I began creating live events where we could connect and share sacred space. I began asking my subscribers what they wanted and testing out different kinds of events.

I turned my Energy Magic Coaching into a community event. I started a Heretic Happy Hour where we could share our magical journeys. I launched a spiritual book club… and even embraced a Love Money spin-off group where we could practice creating a powerful relationship with the energy of Money.

Now, I know what you’re thinking…

Live events really aren’t a revolutionary idea, Allysha. Lots of folks have gatherings for their paid subscribers.

Yes, I know. Live events are an obvious part of the Substack model.

But I have yet to find another Substack subscription that offers MANY live events and trainings every month.

Because it’s kind of insane. (But also amazing!)

My Substack currently offers the kind of community gatherings and trainings that you’d get from a $49+/month subscription on a website.

And the joke is that I keep wanting to add more, because I LOVE gathering with this community and sharing Magic. I love the sacred space that we create together, and I’m constantly amazed at how learning and training together expands our lives.

It’s recently occurred to me that people probably don’t realize what’s going on here, because there are so many great Substack writers out there pouring their hearts onto the page and creating amazing experiences for people.

But Mystery, Magic & Mayhem is different.

⟴ The Inner Sanctum of Heretics is not just a place where you can support my writing (though that’s an awesome thing to do and it’s always welcome).

⟴ It’s not just a place where you can read about spiritual ideas and find inspiration.

🌟 It’s a place where you can dip your toes (or immerse yourself) in the waters of Magic. A community where you can try on a different way of being from the culture you were born into. A world where you can literally level up as a wizard, witch, mage, intuitive, psychic, healer, or whatever magic you were born to this life.

The Inner Sanctum of Heretics is a place where we actually learn Ancestral Magic!

Most of all, the Inner Sanctum of Heretics is a place to find nourishment along the Path, and a community of magical humans who accept, appreciate, and encourage you every step of the way.

I’ve done a lot of soul-searching around my prices, because I want this community to be accessible to everyone, but I also know how much value is here and I want people to be able to receive it.

When we don’t pay enough for something, it’s easy to undervalue it. And right now, the Inner Sanctum of Heretics is WAY WAY WAY underpriced.

So I’m going to be raising my prices soon. Anyone who becomes a paid subscriber before October 1 will be grandfathered in at the current price.*

* Please know that I will always offer scholarships (for all my work) to anyone for whom price is a barrier. Money cannot keep you away from Magic… but that illusion is often part of the journey. 😉

We’re currently reading a book that’s both mythic and practical—Take Back the Magic: Conversations with the Unseen World by Perdita Finn. In her entertaining and humorous style, Perdita invites us to a powerful exploration beyond the Veil, where we discover that the dead are all around us, waiting to help. Through anecdotes and synchronicities, we’re invited to explore for ourselves a reality that is more exciting, more epic, and much more fun than the mundane worldview we inherited from Western culture.

NOTE ABOUT THE BOOK CLUB:

We’re changing the formatting of our Heretic Reading Circle—instead of reading one book every month, we’re embracing a more fluid and natural pace for our gatherings.

I’ll be selecting books as I feel called to new titles and asking the whole circle to contribute. The idea here is to really allow our magical curriculum and timing to be Divinely-guided, working with members of the Reading Circle for book suggestions and feeling into the space to see what’s next for us.

We hope that this will create an even deeper, more collaborative reading experience.
