Your Home is a Mirror - Change Your Space, Change Your Life
Magical Guest Series encore with Space Doula® Dorena Kohrs
Arriving home from my sacred journey to France, I am offering myself the grace of a slow re-entry. I’m taking time to integrate… to assess how I have grown… and to invite into my everyday world the magic and lessons that infiltrated my life during my recent adventures. In some ways—I hardly recognize the person who returned home from abroad.
While I gift myself the time to settle and re-organize my Self and my Life around new principles, I am grateful beyond words for this phenomenal encore post for our Magical Guest Series, written by an insightful teacher who inspires me regularly.
is a Space Doula® who teaches about feng shui and the way that our outer environments mirror our interior landscape.I was lucky enough to be introduced to feng shui at a young age and have always been interested, but something about the gentle and intuitive way that Dorena approaches the art speaks to me at a deeper level.
As I settle back into my home in the forests of Québec, present to the many projects that have been patiently awaiting the summer season, I cannot imagine a more perfect subject to explore this week.
I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I have!
Hiya! I’m Dorena, and I’m so happy to be visiting Allysha’s digital world while she’s off on a grand adventure.
I'm also known as the Space Doula® - I help you transform your home into a living blueprint for the life you truly desire. This means aligning your environment with the energy of your dreams - the boldly proclaimed ones and the silently whispered ones - through feng shui, space clearing, organizing, and intentional design.
THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO KNOW
It’s been said by the mystics and the poets that everything in the internal world seeks an outward manifestation.
Your home is one of those outward manifestations.
It’s quite literally a mirror of your life.
When you begin to understand the language of your home, you’ll begin to see how your (often subconscious) thoughts, feelings, and beliefs show up in your surroundings.
Here’s the magic: when you can see the patterns in your life reflected in your home, you get the chance to shift them.
Change your space, and you’ll change your life.
HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE LANGUAGE OF YOUR HOME
To understand what your home is saying, we turn to feng shui, the ancient art of creating harmony and balance in our environment.
One of the ways feng shui works is through metaphor. Different parts of your home represent different aspects of your life.
Below is a room-by-room guide to help you read those metaphors. As you go through, take note of what jumps out. Any spontaneous “oh dang” moments are worth following. Trust that your intuition will highlight what’s calling for change.
A gentle heads-up before we dive in…
Metaphors aren’t always warm and fuzzy. Sometimes they reveal uncomfortable truths like where we’re blocking our dreams or amplifying limiting beliefs. But that’s also where the magic is. Once you see the mirror, your inspired brain knows what to do. You’ll naturally start making changes that attract more of what you want and less of what you don’t.
FENG SHUI METAPHORS
FRONT DOOR
Your first impression to the world—and the entry point for energy.
If you’re feeling overlooked, stuck, or sluggish, start here. A mini makeover can do wonders: a new doormat, a fresh coat of paint, or upgraded lighting all signal you're ready for fresh energy to flow in.
WINDOWS
Your clarity and intuition.
Windows are the eyes of your home. If your thinking feels foggy or doubt is clouding your vision, clean your windows—inside and out. Remove anything that blocks your view, like overgrown landscaping or bulky furniture. Clear sightlines create clearer insights.
YOUR BEDROOM
Your inner world and self-perception.
This is your sanctuary. If you want to feel more seen, valued, or nurtured, start here. Don’t wait to upgrade your sheets, fold the laundry, or find a new home for the work files that snuck in.
YOUR CLOSET
Your identity and how you feel about yourself.
Like the front door and bedroom, your closet carries big energy. If you want to shift how the world sees you—or how you see yourself—let go of what no longer aligns. Yes, even that expensive shirt you never wear.
BATHROOM
Your ability to release what no longer serves you.
If you’re holding on to what you know you need to let go of, this space will show it. Toss expired products (yes, including medical supplies), organize what stays, and notice how your energy lightens in the process.
KITCHEN
Your nourishment and abundance.
If you could use a financial boost or more vitality, look here. Old food, stacked bills, or unused appliances can create energetic blocks. Pro tip: use all your stove burners regularly—it symbolizes openness to multiple streams of wealth and support.
DINING ROOM
Your sense of connection and belonging.
Traditionally, it’s where we gather. If it’s collecting dust, aim to eat one meal a week here. Add photos of people you love to be around—or repurpose the space entirely. Could it be a home office, library, or meditation space?
LIVING ROOM
Your connection to yourself and others.
This is the space to relax, unwind, and come together. Think deep conversations, games of Uno, or wine and laughter. To encourage more connection, try rearranging furniture so the TV isn’t the star attraction.
ATTIC
Your higher aspiration and future self.
If your dreams feel out of reach or stalled, check what’s stored overhead. Let go of what belongs to the past and keep only what supports where you’re headed.
PLUMBING
Your emotions and your money.
A clogged sink might point to unprocessed emotions or outdated money beliefs. A leak could reflect energy drains—or that one-click Amazon habit. Small repairs can spark meaningful shifts.
ELECTRICITY
Your life-force energy.
Feeling scattered or burnt out? Take a look at overloaded outlets or jumbled wiring. Your nervous system and your home’s electrical system are more connected than you think.
A MEDITATIVE JOURNEY
Now that you know what each area represents, I invite you to take a meditative journey through your home—where every room becomes a mirror.
Here’s how:
Choose a quiet moment when you feel grounded.
Light a candle and set an intention to see how your home is mirroring your life.
Walk into a room and describe it using 2–3 adjectives.
Refer back to the metaphors above to see what area of life that room reflects.
Let your descriptions be your guide.
If your kitchen feels “bland” or “cramped,” that may echo how you feel about money or nourishment. If your bedroom feels “neglected,” that might reflect something about your relationship with yourself.
This work is endlessly revealing.
When change feels hard or out of reach, remember: your home is a living metaphor. It can show you what’s ready to shift—and help you make it happen.
Here’s to creating a space that supports the life you want to live.
xoxo

I agree! The outer mirrors the inner. My home is a reflection of the people that live there. I learn a lot from what I ignore or try to hide. And from what pleases me and brings in the light. I love that my home can be a guide, a teacher! Thanks for your share here Dorena! 💜
This is amazing, you two! 💖 I feel so inspired to tend my home and all her spirits now. Thank you for this goodness!
