In the States it’s traditional to say “Happy New Year” slightly before the new year or within a few days after, but in France, we say Bonne Année to someone the first time we see or speak to them that year— even if that’s not until April!

I’m struck by how lucky I am to be able to step away so completely.
Being born an American comes with a lot of privileges, but leisure and vacation time isn’t one of them. Choosing to spend most of my adult life in Europe and Canada, I’m acutely aware of how amazing it is to simply stop from time to time… and how necessary.
Every year, the time between Christmas and New Year’s is a time of recharging for me—a full stop that leaves me striding into the new year refreshed and inspired.
As a writer, it feels necessary and urgent.
The December-January changeover is like finishing a rough draft and going back to page one to start editing. After all that work, I need to grab a glass of bubbly and stick my head out the window, screaming, “I did it!” Only then can I pick up the pen and start all over again.
The modern world yammering “resolutions” or “new you” every New Year’s is utterly incongruous with my reality. Midst the hope of new beginnings, there’s always rhetoric about making the next year a great one, as if we long to simply manhandle life and time into submission.
But that’s not the way it works.
The truth is—we don’t know this year yet.
We don’t know what it will be like.
We don’t know what challenges we’ll face.
We don’t know who we’ll become.
As we step into a new year, we step into the Unknown.

Instead of turning this page into the new year and trying to force it to be awesome…
What if we brought curiosity instead?
What if January was not about resolving, but about discovering? What if we were deeply curious about who we are and what lies ahead?

Let’s pause and ask the question: Where do my heart and soul long to go?
That longing—deeper than the surface-level searching for satisfaction—is sacred.

It awakens in you an aliveness that burns with excitement.
